Business class in session at ASU's West Valley campus.

What to expect in class?

You might wonder how to prepare for classes, where the building is located and what to expect from your instructor. Here are the things every Sun Devil needs to know before classes begin:

Finding your class

You can access your class schedule, maps of campus and directions to buildings on the ASU Mobile App. Download it through your device's app store. Once class begins, you can access Canvas, view your class roster, and use the chat feature to connect with classmates directly through the app.

If you get to class more than 10 minutes early, remember there might be a class in the space before yours. It doesn’t hurt to peek in the room 10 minutes before class starts. You shouldn't need an ID to access class but some secure buildings on campus, like the fitness centers and residence halls, require an ASU ID to enter.

Getting class books and materials

Get the textbooks your professor recommends before classes begin (see the "Books" link in the My Classes box in My ASU). Visit the Sun Devil Campus Stores to buy or rent your required textbooks. You can shop by schedule or by individual courses for new, used and digital options. Check the course syllabus and plan to bring your laptop or a notepad and pen for taking notes.

Accessing Canvas, iCourses and email

Most ASU instructors use Canvas to deliver their course content and announcements. Once you log in to Canvas, you can access course content like assignments, discussion boards, exams, lecture notes, reading materials and videos. An ASU iCourse is an internet-based course that can be taken by campus students. iCourses will always have a Canvas component. Review this guide to understanding Canvas before the first day of class. Faculty and staff will also email your ASU email address, so check it regularly!

Connecting to ASU Wi-Fi

To connect to the ASU Wi-Fi you will log in with your ASURITE ID and password and accept the certificate if prompted. ASU may block sites that are illegal or harmful. For ASU tech support, call 1-855-278-5080.

Laptop and software help

Regardless of your ASU campus, visit the Tech Hub for free IT support. Whether you can’t connect to the wireless network or you think your system is infected with a virus, experts are ready. Check hours and location for your campus. As a Sun Devil, you have an ASU Digital Backpack with your name on it. All backpacks are loaded with the latest technologies like Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Workspace, Slack and Zoom.

Changing your class schedule or major

ASU’s academic advisors can answer questions about your major and help you change classes, switch majors and stay on track each semester by ensuring you're enrolled in the right courses. Connect with your advisor through the My ASU Academic Support Team box.

Need to talk to someone?

ASU Counseling Services' open call and open chat offer simple access to emotional health and well-being support. All services at ASU Counseling Services are confidential and free of charge for ASU students attending any of the four metropolitan Phoenix campuses, including Open Call and Open Chat. Take a few minutes to create a profile in the app and when it’s time to schedule a telehealth appointment or view health resources, you’ll be all set.
